Background

Since 1995, Hong Kong Council on Smoking and Health (COSH) has been collaborating with local professional troupe on the School Interactive Education Theatre Programme, which is one of the major education and publicity campaigns to spread smoke-free messages among children and teenagers. In the past 30 years, the Programme has delivered over 2,200 performances reaching over 620,000 students and teachers. The previous performances were well received by students and teachers. According to our evaluation report, majority of students rated the performance as good and wished to participate in the Programme again. Improvements on the tobacco-related knowledge and perceptions were observed.

Promoting smoke-free messages in an interactive way

Through cooperation with schools and local professional troupe, COSH encourages the children and youth to promote the development of a smoke-free culture and tobacco control. Past drama performances include "Smoke-free Detective", “Smoke-free Dream Adventure”, “Smoke-free Rangers”, “Smoke-free Detective Adventure”, “Smoke-free Family”, “Where is Daddy”, “Smoke-free Alliance”, “Game On Smoke Off“ and “Smoke-free Magic Boy" etc,. The key messages of tobacco control are delivered along with music, stage effects and interesting presentation. Through the performance, students learn about the harmful effects of smoking, secondhand smoke, third-hand smoke and alternative smoking products, and receive positive messages such as fallacies about smoking, how to refuse smoking and the benefits of a smoke-free environment. This aims to help students build a smoke-free and healthy lifestyle at an earlier age and encourage smokers to kick the habit.

This year, the Programme is co-organized by Education Bureau and collaborated with iStage Theatre to produce and deliver a new drama “Journey To The Health”. In addition to helping primary school students understand the dangers of tobacco and letting them know the importance of rejecting the first puff of cigarettes, it also reveals the harm of second-hand and third-hand smoke to non-smokers. Students are invited to encourage their families and friends to quit smoking and support a smoke-free Hong Kong.
