Hong Kong Smoke-free Leading Company Awards Recognized Over 200 Listed Companies and SMEs Hong Kong Council on Smoking and Health (COSH) organised the “Awards Presentation Ceremony of the Hong Kong Smoke-free Leading Company Awards” on 14 March 2012 at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre for the purpose of recognizing outstanding companies and organizations from various industries and sectors in promoting smoke-free workplace.

Fully supported by the Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce, the campaign attracted over 200s listed companies and SMEs to join and reached to more than 52,000 employees. After a series of conscientious evaluation, observational visits and judging process, the Judging Panel has selected 15 companies to receive the Grand Awards, another 15 companies the Certificates of Merit with Special Recognition and 181 companies the Certificates of Merit.

The Awards Presentation Ceremony was officiated by Dr York Y N CHOW, GBS, JP (Secretary for Food and Health), Dr Thomas TSANG, JP (Acting Director of Health), Ms Lisa LAU, MH, JP (COSH Chairman), Prof Sophia Chan (COSH Vice-Chairman), Mr Andrew YUEN (General Committee Member of Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce), Prof LAM Tai-hing, JP (Director, School of Public Health, The University of Hong Kong) and Dr Patrick WONG, BBS, JP (Chairman of Quit-Winners Club).

“COSH has been actively promoting smoking cessation after the extension of designated no smoking areas to public indoor areas and workplace in 2007 for the sake of public health. The “Hong Kong Smoke-free Leading Company Awards” held this year is aimed to strengthen this smoke-free culture and encourage smoking cessation among businesses, their employees as well as their family members for a smoke-free Hong Kong.” Ms Lisa LAU, MH, JP, COSH Chairman said. The Chairman further suggested that the awards-winning companies could fulfill their corporate social responsibilities by leading the industry to advocate the smoke-free culture and to construct a smoke-free Hong Kong.

Honourable Patron Dr York Y N CHOW, GBS, JP, Secretary for Food and Health also added, “More and more socially-responsible employers have made strenuous efforts in supporting the government policy and promoting a smoke-free workplace nowadays in Hong Kong. Many of their innovative, inspiring and effective approaches have been disseminating smoke-free messages among their workforce, encouraging and supporting their staff to quit smoking. These measures not only help to improve the health and efficiency of their staff but also bring along a win-win-win situation amongst corporate, staff and community.”
