Dr York CHOW is Awarded the World No Tobacco Day Director-General's Special Recognition Award for His Effort on Tobacco Control To recognize Hong Kong’s effort on tobacco control, WHO Western Pacific regional director, Dr SHIN Young-soo came to Hong Kong to present the World No Tobacco Day Director-General's Special Recognition Award to Dr York CHOW, Secretary for Food and Health on 29 May 2011.

WHO expressed that continued tobacco-control advocacy and education was implemented constantly in Hong Kong with an aim to build a smoke-free community. Under the leadership of Dr Chow, smoke-free legislation on public places could be implemented. The award also praised for his commitment towards tobacco-control and leadership competency.

Dr CHOW was honored at receiving the award and expressed that the award has been earned by various sectors working dedicatedly in carrying out tobacco control policies and measures over the years. These include medical sector, COSH, academia, non-governmental organizations, general public and certain government department in past years. Hong Kong Government will continue to strengthen resources on tobacco control and smoking cessation to further protect public health.
