Open Letter to Financial Secretary, HKSAR Government Raising Tobacco Tax Substantially to Lower Smoking Prevalence
In order to prevent children and youth from starting to smoke and encourage smokers to quit, an open letter was sent by Hong Kong Council on Smoking and Health (COSH), in co-signatory with medical and health organizations and academic professionals, to the Financial Secretary to reiterate that raising tobacco tax is one of the most effective measures of tobacco control. The government is called on raising tobacco tax by 100% in FY2015-2016 and formulating a proactive and long-term policy on tobacco tax to further reduce the smoking prevalence of Hong Kong. More resources should be allocated on tobacco control, such as smoke-free education, smoking cessation services and enforcement to combat smuggling, etc.
